Mothering Without a Mother.
Here’s something nobody tells you: you don’t age out of missing your mother.
You can be 65, 75, or 85, with grown kids and grandbabies, and still catch yourself reaching for the phone to call her. Or wishing someone, anyone, still called you by the name only she used.
If that’s you, you’re a motherless mother. And a lot of us Seasoned Folks are, even if we never thought of it that way.
Why it hits differently now
For years, we were too busy to feel it. Kids, work, caregiving, getting through. Now life slows down, and the loss has room to breathe.
Aging stirs it up in its own ways:
- You’re the oldest generation now. There’s no one above you anymore.
- Health scares make you wonder what you passed down, and what you wish she’d told you.
- Holidays, birthdays, and grandbaby milestones come with a quiet “I wish she were here.”
- Sorting, downsizing, and decluttering can bring her things (and her memory) rushing back.
- Nobody left remembers you as a little girl.
None of that means you’re doing grief wrong. It means you loved her.
Ways to carry it:
- Say her name. Out loud, often. Tell the stories. Let the grandkids know who she was.
- Keep one tradition alive. Her recipe, her Sunday ritual, her silly saying. Small things count.
- Write her a letter. Tell her what’s happened since. It doesn’t need to be pretty, and nobody has to read it.
- Plan ahead for the hard days. If her birthday or the holidays are rough, give yourself a plan and a gentle landing spot.
- Find your people. Other women who get it make a world of difference. A friend, a faith community, a support group.
- Be kind to your body. Grief is tiring, and aging is already asking a lot. Rest, eat, move a little, and tell your doctor if it feels too heavy.
- Pass it on. Record your own stories, label the photos, write down the recipes. You’re becoming the one who holds the family’s memory.
That last one is the heart of what we do at Seasoned Folks. The mother you miss left you a legacy, and you’re building one too.
